Kansas Youth to Represent State at National Electric Cooperative Meeting

Jacob Wagner of Salina traveled to New Orleans, LA, to serve on the Youth Leadership Council (YLC) of the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA) during its 67th Annual Meeting, February 13-18, 2009.

Representing Kansas and sponsored by DS&O and the Kansas Electric Cooperatives, Inc. (KEC), Wagner will join high school students from 44 other states in assisting the national trade association conduct its Annual Meeting, which is expected to draw more than 10,000 electric co-op leaders from around the country.

Wagner will work at the NRECA Congressional Action Center to encourage cooperative members to contact their Senators and U.S. Representatives on key co-op issues, including protecting electricity consumers. He will also provide assistance to NRECA staff and participate in educational forums. The YLC is a central part of the opening general session ceremony, which will showcase Wagner carrying the Kansas state flag to the stage during the Parade of States.

The Youth Leadership Council is an extension of the Rural Electric Youth Tour, a group of nearly 1,500 high school students who are sponsored jointly by NRECA, local electric cooperatives and statewide associations in 45 states. The Youth Tour meets in Washington, D.C., in June of each year where they visit with their state delegations in both the U.S. House and Senate, attend educational seminars and visit historical landmarks. Each state attending The Youth Tour selects a representative for the YLC. The YLC then attends a week-long summer Leadership Conference back in Washington, D.C., where participants take courses on leadership and learn to write and deliver speeches.

KEC is the statewide service organization for the rural electric cooperatives in Kansas. Formed in 1941 and headquartered in Topeka, KEC represents the interests of and provides needed services and programs to the electric co-ops that serve in Kansas. Today, KEC serves 29 distribution electric cooperatives and two generation and transmission electric cooperatives providing electricity to over 200,000 Kansas households and to approximately 80% of the land mass.

NRECA is the national service organization representing the nation’s more than 900 private, consumer-owned electric cooperatives, which provide electric service to 40 million people in 47 states.
